CHAPTER XXV

My dear Fanny,

What a wretch of an Aunt I have been to you lately. And to think that I, of all Aunts, was your chosen correspondent! What can you have thought when I failed to write back? As I too was once a fanciful young Miss, I believe I can guess. You imagined me kidnapped or courted by Royalty or apprehended for larceny and thrown in a cell. Am I close? Then I must disappoint you again. My reasons are all of the tedious sort, I fear, and you will feel no sympathy when you hear of them. For example, we had to move into Gay Street with great work and upheaval, but that is of no interest to you. And your Aunt Cassandra has been away nursing the sick, leaving me with the charge of your dear Grandmama. And since you have not yet had to deal with joints of mutton or doses of rhubarb – and long may you preserve your own innocence – you cannot know what it entails. You see, I am well aware that the young – like yourself – have little patience with old, and now nine-and-twenty, I find myself comfortably on the wrong side. For all that, my dear Fanny, I will not despair of you and your irredeemably sweet nature. Though my silence has been quite unforgiveable, I confidently expect you to forgive it at once.

And in a few short weeks, my faith will be tested for we hope to arrive with you some time in June! We shall come via Hampshire, bringing you a playmate in the shape of your cousin Anna and then what fun we shall have! In the meantime, please have a word with the local weather on behalf of your Grandmama. She requires it neither too hot nor too cold.
